Stump grinding

Tree stumps ground out below ground level, the chippings dealt with and the area left ready to turf, plant or build on.

A stump left in the ground is a trip hazard, gets in the way of mowing and landscaping, and can send up new shoots for years. Grinding it out is quicker and far less disruptive than digging it out.

The grinder cuts the stump and the main roots away to below ground level, turning them into chippings. It works on stumps from old removals as well as trees we've just taken down.

What's included

Grinding below ground level
Deep enough for you to lay turf or plant over the area.
Surface roots
The main roots near the surface ground out as well.
Chippings
Used to backfill the hole, or taken away so you can top up with soil.
Old and new stumps
Stumps left by other contractors or from years ago, as well as fresh ones.
Tidy finish
The area raked off and left neat.

Questions about stump grinding

How deep do you grind?

Below ground level, deep enough to lay turf or plant over the area. If you're planning to build or lay a patio there, tell us and we'll talk through what's needed.

What about pipes and cables near the stump?

Let us know about anything you know is buried near the stump. We check before we start, and we'll take care around services.

Will the stump grow back?

Grinding removes the stump and the main roots near the surface, which stops most trees regrowing. A few species can still send up the odd shoot from roots further out, which are easy to deal with.

Can you get into my back garden?

Tell us about the access when you ask for a quote, including the width of any gate or passage, and we'll make sure we bring the right machine.
