Tree surgery and pruning
Crown reductions, deadwooding and careful pruning that keep a tree healthy, safe and in proportion with your garden.
Most trees don't need taking down. They need the right cuts in the right places. Tree surgery is the planned removal of selected branches so the tree is safer, lets more light in and stays in proportion with the house and garden around it.
We work to correct arboricultural practice on every job: clean cuts in the right place, no more taken off than the tree can cope with, and no topping or hacking back that leaves a tree weaker than before.
What tree surgery covers
- Crown reduction
- Bringing the overall height and spread down evenly, so the tree keeps its natural shape.
- Crown thinning
- Taking out selected inner branches to let light and wind through without changing the outline.
- Crown lifting
- Removing the lower branches to clear paths, drives, roads and windows.
- Deadwooding
- Taking out dead, dying and broken branches before they fall.
- Formative and hedge pruning
- Shaping younger trees and keeping hedges and conifers under control.
When you might need it
- Branches overhanging the house, roof, garage or a neighbour's garden
- The tree is blocking light to the house or garden
- Dead or broken branches you can see from the ground
- Branches touching phone lines, gutters or windows
- A tree that has simply outgrown the space it is in

Questions about tree surgery & pruning
Will pruning harm my tree?
Done properly, no. We take off only what the tree can cope with and cut in the right places so it can seal the wounds. Heavy topping is what damages trees, and we don't do it.
When is the best time of year to prune?
Most trees can be pruned at any time of year. Some species are better left until a particular season, and nesting birds are protected by law in spring and summer, so we check for active nests before we start. We'll tell you if it is worth waiting.
Do I need permission to prune my tree?
If a tree has a Tree Preservation Order or stands in a conservation area, you normally need consent from the council before work starts. If you're not sure, ask us when we quote and we'll tell you what to check.
Can you cut back branches from my neighbour's tree?
You can usually have branches that overhang your boundary cut back to the boundary line. It's always best to talk to your neighbour first. We can advise on what's sensible on the day of the quote.
